Mother’s Day 2014
Even though this post is a little belated, we hope all mother’s had a wonderful Mother’s Day last Sunday 11th May..
We dressed up our reception to especially welcome all the mum’s with some yummy chocolates!
Thanks for the Easter Memories
Well Easter, Anzac and school holidays are over and our guests have all packed up and gone home, but WOW – what a fabulous time we all had!
Our Kidz Korner activities were a hit and proved very popular amongst kids and parents!
The amount of positive comments we received was overwhelming, so a big thank you to our staff! We are very pleased to know that our guests enjoyed these activities.
The Front Office team worked like a well-oiled machine and all went very smoothly for all arrivals and departures – our main entrance and exit streets of the park were very busy as you will see by the pics.
The maintenance & grounds crew had the park sparkling. First impressions are always important and our guests weren’t disappointed. We received many positive comments about the great condition of the park.
Our housekeeping staff put in big efforts in the lead up to Easter getting all our accommodations ready for our guests. Our accommodation while older and in need of refurbishment, is clean and comfortable and most of our rooms have amazing ocean views. As we write, the renovations have begun on our Oceanview Spa and Waterview Villas and we can’t wait until we get some new cabins, hopefully by the end of this year!
It has been a pleasure watching all staff participate in the Easter/Anzac preparations and activities, and to see the “buzz” they get from the positive feedback received from our guests. It is so very much appreciated!
We are very proud of all our staff, nothing is too much trouble for the team and they all share a common goal…………to make Brighton Caravan Park the best it can be.
Thank you for a great Easter and we look forward to welcoming you back to our park soon!
Sites are ready for our guests
We’ve been working hard on some of our sites, restoring their grass to pristine condition so they are ready for our influx of guests over Easter.
We’ve been watering, caring and then watering some more – giving our best efforts to make sure this new grass holds and takes.
And we think we’ve done a pretty good job.
Here’s a few pics to show you how good the grass is looking (it almost looks like we have photo-shopped our images cause our grass looks so green and good!)
Bring on Easter we say!!
Our new BBQ area is complete
The renovations have started…
Well the renovations have started at Brighton Caravan Park! Our 3 Oceanview Spa Villa’s, and 2 of our Waterview Villas are getting refurbished first, and we thought we’d share a couple of pics of the cabins being freshly painted. We hope that you like our changes! We look forward to sharing the finished project with you all soon!
Green & Grassy Sites
We’ve got some new turf being laid today and we’re very excited!
We hope that the rain holds for us to help water it in..
Not all sites are being re-turfed at present – just some that desperately needed it.
Our plan is to re-turf (and re-level) other areas of the park after the major redevelopment works are complete!
Fun Times over the March Long Weekend
We’ve had a fabulous time over the long weekend with our guests. It was the Adelaide Cup weekend and many of our guests took the opportunity for a weekend away and spend it with us at the beach! Here are a couple of pics of the fun times we had with the kids in our activities – Sand Castle Building and Water Balloon Spoon Races.
Thursday Travel Tip – Using a Fuel Calculator
With rising fuel prices, it is easy to assume that road travel is becoming too expensive.
Ever wondered what the total cost of fuel will be to get to a specific destination?
Well today we share a great little tool that the NSW state caravan and camping association (CCIA) has created.
The fuel calculator will assist in working out this all important figure, so travellers have a guide on their approximate fuel costs to reach their preferred destinations.
Once you have used this calculator, you will find that there is some good news when it comes to fuel, and it’s not as bad as the media sometimes suggests, and that your fuel cost is only a small portion of your overall holiday.

Relieve the Itch… Midges & Sand Flies – facts/remedies
(Original article by Caravan Living but has been adapted and updated)
Have you ever been on a caravan or camping trip and been bitten (or eaten alive) by those pesky bugs known as midges or sand flies?
Well I have and it isn’t pleasant.
Many of our guests have also been a target and while it is unfortunate – it happens, so we thought best to share some tips and tricks to help keep the little buggers away, or at least at bay.
Midges live in the sand and mud of swampy waterways and mangroves. They are very small and even though they do look like a fly, they are too small to see their wings; they look like a small piece of fine dark cut hair, so this makes them difficult to see. Because they are so small, they can easily fly through normal fly screens.
Midges will attack all animals, so you will generally notice birds reacting to being bitten. For those of you with pets, you may have noticed the same.
It is said that midges/sand flies do not bite but actually urinate on you – so we thought I should investigate that further and this is not correct. According to the Department of Medical Entomology of the University of Sydney, they are blood suckers and inject saliva into the skin to allow easy extraction of the blood. They bite during dawn and dusk when there is little to no wind, so best to avoid swampy areas during these times.
Locals in midge-prone areas tend to build up immunity over time, whereas for travellers – they generally do not, so we recommend that all our guests take preventative measures (and stock up on remedies), just in case!
Generally you will find once you have been bitten – the first few days/nights can be a challenge. The bites are often not itchy straight away, they then can become unbearably itchy, can weep and also form small blisters – this is not uncommon and obviously varies to the individual. After a few days, the bites decrease in size and become a darker purpley-red colour and are not as itchy and they become bearable.
Preventative Measures
- Avoid swampy, wet sand during dawn and dusk
- Cover your skin with clothing (this can be a little hard when you visit the tropics)
- Before going outside, use tropical strength insecticide spray/lotions – for those of you conscious about toxins on the skin, you may prefer the next option
- Apply baby oil (mixed with Dettol) before going outside
- Take high doses of B12 [1000mg] daily, at least two months before going to the location
- Eat lots of bananas- taking the B12 tablets makes much more sense
Remedies
- Bath the affected area with salted cool water. The ocean is great for this
- Showering before bed (excessive heat will exacerbate the itch, so opt for cooler a temperature)
- Applying SOOV cream to the affected area/s – the “cool” in the gel takes relieves the itch.
- Calamine lotion. Ok for kids but maybe not the most suitable option for adults
- Numbing spray for instant, short term relief
- Tea Tree oil
- Stop Itch or Stingoes lotion from the pharmacy
- Antihistamine. You need one specific for bites – speak to the pharmacy on which would be best
- For severe or even allergic reactions – seek a GP’s professional opinion. In the past, when I have been bitten badly which resulted in welts – I had to receive special medication and steroid cream to assist with the bites. The cream/lotion that the doctor prescribed me, once applied to the affected areas – had to also have glad wrap put on around the area, to allow the cream to really soak into the bite – I would generally leave this overnight and it worked very well. Everyone is different though so do what is best for you!
